Our partnership with The Ara Project has made Hotel Punta Islita's blue skies more colorful. The Ara Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the breeding and reintroduction of Costa Rica's beautiful, yet endangered red (Ara macaw) and green (Ara ambiguous) species. Jumpstarted in the 1980's by a retired expat American couple The Ara Project is now staffed by a dedicated group of scientists, administrators, and volunteers who have successfully bred and set free close to a hundred specimens in three wildlife release sites in Costa Rica.
Hotel Punta Islita donated a plot of land embedded in the tropical dry forest, a specialized aviary cage, living quarters for a biologist, and the biologist's wages. The first release of five pairs of red macaws was completed this year. These beautiful specimens are delighting our guests with their majestic flight, showing off brilliant hues of red, gold, and blue as they successfully forage the local forest.
