Hotel Punta Islita opened its doors in 1994 in a setting of economic disadvantage and environmental decline. Access to education was limited, professional opportunities were inexistent, and the tropical dry forest had been stripped by slash-and-burn agriculture and cattle ranching. Developed in full synergy with its local neighbors, Hotel Punta Islita engaged in beach cleanup, wildlife conservation, and reforestation initiatives. It gradually provided employment opportunities, first in construction, then in increasingly more specialized service areas. Art programs and complementary education further provided empowering tools for the local communities. Today, Hotel Punta Islita is not only a globally-recognized destination, but a thriving region characterized by a healthy natural environment and a dynamic collective of travel professionals, community artists, and micro-entrepreneurs.
